A Sort Of Weekend

Finally, the weekend is here… sort of. There’s still a whole bunch of work ahead and we are just getting up to steam preparing the schools for their quickly approaching new year.

Compounding our woes was the county’s decision to switch to a new email hosting provider that, if you were to ask me, is an outfit that is being run by a couple of high school dropouts out of their parents’ basement.

Their implementation of IMAP is absolutely horrendous and we have several heavy weight admins who are having serious issues with multipart MIME that is resulting in them having broken attachments. Also, contrary to what the county thinks, nobody can access or manage their folders from any email client, not Outlook, not Outlook Express, not Apple Mail, not Entourage, not Thunderbird… nothing. It’s a real mess and we are expecting a flood of calls as the teachers and admins return from the break. As it is, I was on the phone for about an hour yesterday playing the role of (as she called it) “Technological Psycotherapist” to one of the school district’s IT Coordinators.

The past couple of weeks have been quite the contrast to the screeching halt that heralded the summer break. In fact, by the end of the weekend I’m thinking that we will definately need to be fully on our new ticket system if we expect to keep our heads from exploding. So I’ll be on there tonight busily doing a few more final tweaks to enable the things that I had turned off while I was testing it, such as the autoreplies.
